School immersion in Australia -15-18 years old – 1 semester to 1 school year

This program is designed for motivated students aged 15 to 18 who wish to study for one semester or one school year (4 terms) in a High School in Australia. It’s a unique opportunity to live alongside young Australians of your age and share the daily life of the host family.

Why Australia ?

Australia, by its size, is the 6th largest country in the world. Surrounded by the Pacific and Indian Oceans, this vast island-continent is filled with fabulous landscapes, magnificent and extremely rich fauna and flora, which are unique.

Students will be amazed by the varied landscapes of Australia, from the arid deserts of the center, known as the “Outback,” to the lush tropical forests and modern, dynamic metropolises like Sydney and Melbourne. Australia is also famous for its love of sports, including cricket, rugby, and Australian Rules football, providing students with numerous opportunities to engage in the local sporting culture.

Stays can take place anywhere in Australia. It is a vast continent-country where geographical distances are significant. The car is the primary means of transportation, and public transportation networks are generally less developed, except in major cities. International students coming from Europe, where public transportation networks are more developed, will need to adapt to this difference when studying in Australia and may need to rethink their travel habits by planning their journeys based on the available transportation options.

The schools

Australian high schools offer students outstanding school and sports facilities. They also organize a wide range of extracurricular activities and numerous sports competitions.

For long-term stays, students are placed in public schools. For short-term stays, students may be placed in independent or private schools.

The designation of the student’s academic year, class schedule, and recognition of attendance at the end of the year are entirely at the discretion of the school you are enrolled in. The final year (Year 12) is not accessible to foreign students, as this year is exclusively for preparing for the end-of-school examination.

Classes typically run from 8:00 or 9:00 am to 3:30 pm.

Courses

You follow the school curriculum in a High School alongside Australian students. Your program consists of 5 to 6 subjects that you choose from those offered by the school.

The compulsory subjects typically include English, mathematics, and science.

Some schools also offer specializations in certain subjects such as music, oriental languages, computer science, theater, robotics, graphic design, etc.

In Australia, schools have “levies,” which are additional fees for non-compulsory subjects. For example, if you opt for the “rainforests” course and the school organizes excursions, you will need to pay additional fees to cover these extras. These fees may apply to many subjects.

Secondary school in Australia covers years 7 or 8 to 12. It follows primary school (years 1 to 6 or 7).

The Australian school year starts at the end of January and ends in early December. It is divided into two semesters.

Each semester consists of two terms of approximately ten weeks each. There are two weeks of vacation between each term, and the summer holidays (in December/January) last six weeks.

Classes generally take place from Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm.

Wearing a uniform is mandatory in the majority of schools.

Host families are volunteers and arguably the most crucial element of the program. Therefore, we place utmost importance on their selection. They choose to host students because they want to introduce and share their way of life and culture. After being selected based on interviews and references, the family actively participates in choosing the student they will host.

There is no typical family; the family that will host you may have children or not; they may be a blended family or a single-parent family, a single person whose children no longer live at home, retirees, or younger people. It is not the composition of the family that matters but their availability and motivation to share their culture with you. The socio-economic profile of host families may be very different from what you are accustomed to.

Australians are known for their relaxed lifestyle, friendliness, and love for outdoor activities.

You will be accommodated in a single or shared room and provided with full board. It is possible that the family may host another student from a different nationality at the same time as you. However, in all cases, you will be the only speaker of your native language, if other than English.

It is possible for a student to be hosted by several successive families during their stay.

The local coordinator is an experienced individual who knows the host families and stays in regular contact with the students. Since they can act quickly in case of any issues, they remain your primary contact on-site.

They will be available to answer any questions that may arise once you’re there and assist you with all your arrangements. Regular communication is established with your parents, host family, and school to ensure the best possible experience.

Finally, an emergency contact number will be provided to you so you can reach someone on-site in case of urgent problems.

In order for your stay to go as smoothly as possible and for you to be informed about the various elements of the program, you will have the opportunity to attend an orientation meeting organized by Langues Vivantes in Brussels, during the month of June. This meeting allows Langues Vivantes students to meet and exchange questions and experiences with each other and with the Langues Vivantes team. Former participants are also invited to share their experiences. It is also during this meeting that the final administrative formalities are initiated.

Only for students participating in a long-term program.

Upon their arrival in Australia, students participate in an orientation workshop in Sydney. It is mandatory and applies to all students participating in a long-term program.

Participants are welcomed by the local team of our partner at Sydney airport and undergo a two-day program that allows them to get to know each other, explore the city, and ask any final questions about their stay.

Included in the workshop: round-trip transfers from the airport to the workshop, full board, shared accommodation.

If you wish to join this program, you must meet the following criteria :

  • To be between 15 and 18 years old (the student cannot be older than 18 years and 6 months on the last day of the program).
  • To have a good level of English (the student must achieve a minimum score of 5.5 on the IELTS*).

  • To be vaccinated against COVID.
  • To be willing to make new friends and share the daily life of a host family.
  • To demonstrate an interest in studying other cultures and languages, motivation, maturity, and adaptability.

Go during your secondary school years (before entering 6th grade in Belgium or Terminale in France) and benefit from a discount on your High School Promo stay.

Are you Belgian (Wallonia-Brussels Federation) and want to go during your secondary school years? You have the opportunity to go as part of an EXPEDIS program.

*Belgian and French students are exempt from this exam. However, they must take the ELTiS test and achieve a score of 212.
