Cambridge, a popular destination renowned for its academic excellence and unique atmosphere, is a pleasant and safe city, ideal for young people aged 13 to 17 wishing to explore the English language and culture in a prestigious setting. World-renowned for its university, this historic city offers an inspiring environment for our Junior language courses.

Our Junior programme in Cambridge, specially designed for teenagers, will enable them to improve their English skills whilst discovering one of England’s most famous university towns. Make the most of this unforgettable educational experience to develop your language skills and immerse yourself in the cultural richness of Cambridge.

One of the oldest schools in England, Studio Cambridge was founded in 1954 and enjoys a solid reputation and a long history of teaching. The school welcomes between 100 and 360 students a week, yet retains a warm and friendly atmosphere. Lessons are held in one of the school’s two Victorian-style buildings, depending on the time of year. Both are right in the centre of Cambridge.

The school is very easy to reach, situated 400 metres from the railway station and a 10-minute walk from the city centre.

For summer courses for 16–17-year-olds, lessons take place at Ridley Hall College & Newham College, two traditional Victorian-era colleges situated side by side and a 5–10-minute walk from Cambridge’s historic centre.

English courses: general information

  • Lesson duration: 45 minutes
  • Maximum number of students per class: 16 (average of 13 in summer; 10 at other times of year)
  • Timetable: lessons are usually held in the morning
  • Placement test: on the first day of the course
  • Levels offered: beginner to advanced (intermediate level required for the Thematic Options)
  • Certificate of attendance at the end of the course
  • Teachers are qualified to teach their language to non-native speakers

Intensive English – 20 general English lessons 8 themed lessons per week

The programme combines, per week:

  • 20 lessons (15 hours) of general English
  • 8 lessons (6 hours) in‘English and life skills’
  • 5 sessions of guided study or cultural activities

Guided study

Guided study is organised by your teachers, and a member of staff can assist you. It helps to reinforce and build on what you learn in class, enabling you to make faster progress.

Activities

Cambridge is a fantastic place to study and live. That’s why the school organises a cultural visit to a local attraction every Friday afternoon. On Wednesdays, the school organises a social or sporting activity so that students can practise their English outside of lessons.

Examples of activities:

Off-site activities: Walking tour, Volleyball, Pole-punting on the River Cam, Visit to the Museum of Archaeology, Selfie challenge, Visit to the Sedgwick Museum, Visit to the Fitzwilliam Museum, Football, Visit to the Botanic Gardens, Visit to the spire of Great St Mary’s Church, Rounders, Visit to the college, Visit to the Zoological Museum, Bowling, Basketball.

English & Multi-activities

20 general English lessons per week

Lessons are taught by two different teachers, who use teaching methods focused on speaking and listening.

Different topics are covered each week: adventure, the environment, new technologies, shopping & fashion, celebrities, the media, family and friends, food, health, sport, leisure, travel, investigations, fact or fiction

Levels: elementary to advanced

English and an optional introduction to the University of Cambridge

20 general English lessons 8 themed lessons per week

This option offers young people the opportunity to discover the University of Cambridge and university life. Lessons focus on the university’s history and culture and develop oral communication skills.

Topics covered:

  • student life at Cambridge
  • sporting traditions
  • scientific discoveries
  • the University’s unique history
  • a comparison between the University of Cambridge and other world-class universities

Activities include: a guided tour of Cambridge, a presentation on student life, as well as the true and false myths about the university by a Cambridge student, a treasure hunt, lectures…

Examples of activities – Per week (English & multi-activity programme):

  • 5 half-days of sports and leisure activities on campus or visits to the surrounding area: football, swimming, volleyball, cinema, karaoke, disco night, T-shirt design, mask-making, circus workshop, cake decorating, glass painting, British quiz, walk in Grantchester, walk through Cambridge city centre or a boat trip on the River Cam, exploring the various colleges, museum visits
  • 1 day trip (Saturday): London, Warwick Castle, Leeds Castle, the Harry Potter Studio Tour, Brighton, Oxford (the city and Christ Church College).
  • 7 evenings on campus: quizzes, disco night, treasure hunt, karaoke, film night, themed evening, creative workshop, board games and sports, etc.

Note: for 16–17-year-old stays, evening activities are optional.

Host family

  • Ages 14–17, Autumn Half-Term, winter, spring
  • Twin room, shared bathroom and full board

Journey time to school: maximum 45 minutes (average 30 minutes) by bus.

Cambridge’s historic centre is mainly home to shops, businesses and universities. Residential areas are therefore located on the outskirts of the city centre and are served by an excellent public transport network. All host families live close to a bus stop. Students must use public transport to get to school.

Practical information:

  • Bed linen provided
  • Laundry facilities available (the family usually makes their washing machine available once a week or will let you know which day is designated for washing)
  • Students take part in three evening activities per week. The other evenings are spent with the host family.

Traditional Cambridge University hall of residence (summer only)

Ages 13–17 – Sir Michael

  • Single rooms (or twin rooms on request)
  • Private or shared bathrooms
  • Journey time to school: 3 to 10 minutes’ walk. For their safety, students are taken to school by the supervisor.

Ages 16–17 – Sir Christopher

  • Single rooms
  • Shared bathrooms
  • Full board
  • Deposit payable on arrival (see the ‘Dates & Prices’ tab), refundable by the school at the end of the stay if no damage is found

Facilities / Services available:

  • Each room has a wardrobe, a washbasin, a desk with a lamp, a single bed, a chest of drawers and a mirror.
  • A TV room
  • A dining hall
  • Bed linen provided and changed weekly (towels not provided)
  • Washing machines available
  • Residence monitored 24 hours a day (caretaker on site)
