Language studies in Saint-Malo

Saint-Malo, the City of Corsairs, is one of the jewels of the Brittany coastline known as the Emerald Coast. A fortified city surrounded by magnificent ramparts, Saint-Malo has always been a city of the sea, adventure and exploration. It has a rich maritime history, with famous sailors, explorers, privateers and freebooters… It is, of course, the ideal place to go sailing, but also to visit the spectacular Mont-Saint-Michel or the medieval city of Dinan.

The school and Saint-Malo

Our partner school is located Intra-Muros, in the heart of the historic centre of Saint-Malo, just a few steps from the beach.

Nestled in Brittany, France, the historic center of Saint-Malo is a captivating blend of maritime heritage and architectural beauty. Enclosed by sturdy granite walls, this walled city is a treasure trove of narrow cobblestone streets, quaint shops, and iconic landmarks like Saint-Malo Cathedral. With its roots tracing back to Gallo-Roman times, the city has survived and thrived through various epochs, even undergoing meticulous reconstruction after World War II. Whether you’re exploring its maze-like alleys or gazing at the English Channel from its imposing ramparts, Saint-Malo’s historic center offers a rich, immersive experience in a compact, enchanting space.

Courses

French course

15 French lessons per week (3 lessons per day)

• Length of lesson: 50 minutes
• Maximum number of students per class: 15
• Timetable: Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 1pm
• Placement test: on the first day of the course (written)
• Certificate of attendance at the end of the course
• The courses are taught by native French-speaking teachers who are qualified to teach French as a foreign language. The teaching method is interactive: progress in oral communication is made through role-playing, the use of video, discussions, song study, theatre performances, etc.
• Levels offered: elementary to advanced (no complete beginners, minimum one year’s schooling)

Activities and excursions

In addition to the morning classes, you can choose the activity option that suits you best:

1. French & Activities

• 5 afternoon activities per week
• 1 day excursion on Saturday (minimum stay 2 weeks)

Examples of activities and excursions :

• Intra Muros city tour
• Beach games
• Preparation of “Crêpes bretonnes
• Treasure hunt
• Sports (basketball, football, tennis, volleyball, beach volleyball, etc.)
• Visit to the aquarium and discover underwater life
• Catamaran trips
• Excursions in the region: visit to the famous Mont-Saint-Michel, boat trip to the medieval town of Dinan and visit to the historic centre

2. French & Sailing

• 5 afternoons per week of sailing lessons
• 1 day excursion on Saturday (minimum stay 2 weeks)

Sailing lessons take place at the SNBSM (Plage Bon Secours), a professional and well-known sailing club in Saint-Malo. Optimal supervision is provided and all equipment is supplied.

The sailing boats used are generally catamarans, of the Topaz 14 type, and there are usually 2 participants per boat. The type of catamaran may vary according to the age of the participants.

3. Combined stay: French & Sailing Activities

This package is available for 3 or 4 weeks only.

It combines the French & Sailing option as described above for a duration of 2 weeks and the French & Activities option for a duration of 1 or 2 weeks.

Accommodation

Host family

Shared room with a student of the same sex but of a different nationality, shared bathroom, full board.

Journey time to school: 20 to 25 minutes maximum by public transport

Practical information :

• Meals: breakfasts and dinners with the host family, packed lunches provided on course days
• At weekends, students stay with their families. If the activity or excursion proposed by the host family is not free of charge, the family may ask the student to make a contribution
• Laundry can be done in the host family (generally once a week, depending on the family’s laundry day)

Transfers: the round-trip transfers mentioned above (to accommodation) are included. You should plan to arrive between 12 pm and 6 p.m. and depart between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Please note: do not book your transport ticket until we have confirmed your stay.

Authorisation to go out

Young people aged 15 and over with parental authorisation are authorised to go out in the evening until 9pm. Under-15s and over-15s without parental permission are not allowed to go out outside the supervised activities. The course programme and the various activities are designed to keep them fully occupied.
